For many years, world famous author Paulo Coelho has celebrated St. Josephs Day with a party for his family and dearest friends. A devout Catholic, Coelho bears deep spiritual links to St Joseph, venerated as a saint in the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Anglican and Lutheran faiths. Amongst Catholics, St Joseph is the patron saint of workers, and was declared to be the patron saint and protector of the Catholic Church by Pope Pius IX in 1870.
At once both solemn and joyous, the party was co-hosted this year by the famed pen manufacturer Montegrappa, on the occasion of the company producing a pen in honour of Coelhos most celebrated work, The Alchemist. The companys artisans created a physical embodiment of the book and its alchemical theme, the pen actually featuring six of the seven metals dear to alchemists, with mercury represented by its sign. Its clip functions like a cartographers compass, its barrel and cap engraved with the symbols of the cosmos. The pen, like the novel that inspired it, is a work of art.

Celebrations began with a luncheon and press conference at the sumptuous Villa Ca Erizzo in Bassano del Grappa, home of Montegrappa. Amongst the presenters were historian and alchemy expert Giovanni Marcadella of the Museum of Bassano, Paulo Coelho, Montegrappas CEO, Giuseppe Aquila and his father, Gianfranco, the brands impressive eminence grise.
In the afternoon, guests were treated to a factory tour, all the better to understand and appreciate what goes into a Montegrappa pen. The interlude preceded the party itself, held that evening at the imposing Castello Superiore di Marostica.
Drummers and a display of the tradition Italian flag tossing were followed by an elegant dinner, during which Paulo Coelho took the opportunity to offer a prayer to St Joseph, along with an original poem. The guests were able to hear this in myriad languages, including Portuguese, Japanese, Hungarian, Italian, English, German, French and many others.
As is Coelhos tradition, the 300 guests included his family and friends, joined for 2012 by friends of Montegrappa. Coelhos wife, the painter Christina Oiticica, was one of many artists, for the guest list also included Brazilian Neo-pop artist, painter, serigrapher and sculptor Romero Britto. To the delight of the guests, Britto painted two of Scorpions guitarist Rudolf Schenkers guitars, one with Christina.

Formula 1 legend Jean Alesi, soon to drive in the Indianapolis 500, Carlos Diaz, founder of watchmaker Roger Dubuis and now a successful winemaker, entrepreneur Monty Shadow, footballer Edgar The Pitbull Davids, Jorge Viana senator and Governor of the state of Acre, Brazilian online stars The Jovem Nerds, Jean Pierre Le Calvez, Vice-President Marketing of Hewlett-Packard, Alfred Schopf, CEO of Leica Camera and other illustrious guests witnessed an amazing display of fireworks as the dinner ended.
Live music was provided by jazz musician Nick the Nightfly, followed by some hard rocking, courtesy of Rudolf Schenker, who welcomed Paulo Coelho onstage to reveal his rocknroll heart, inciting the guests to dance into the wee hours.

Da diversi anni, il famosissimo scrittore Paulo Coelho celebra il giorno di San Giuseppe con una festa cui partecipano la sua famiglia e i suoi amici più stretti. Cattolico devoto, Coelho ha un legame spirituale profondo con San Giuseppe, venerato come santo nella confessione cattolica, ortodossa europea, ortodossa orientale, anglicana e luterana. Per i cattolici, San Giuseppe è il santo patrono dei lavoratori, ed è stato dichiarato santo patrono e protettore della Chiesa cattolica da papa Pio IX nel 1870.
Al contempo solenne e gioiosa, l'organizzazione della festa ha visto quest'anno la collaborazione del famoso produttore di penne Montegrappa, in occasione dell'uscita di una penna in onore dell'opera più celebrata di Coelho, L'Alchimista. Gli artigiani dell'azienda hanno creato una trasposizione del libro e del suo tema alchemico dando loro la forma di una penna, che racchiude sei dei sette metalli cari agli alchimisti (il mercurio per ovvi motivi è rappresentato semplicemente con il proprio simbolo). La clip ricorda il compasso di un cartografo, mentre fusto e cappuccio riportano incisi i simboli del cosmo. La penna, come il romanzo che l'ha ispirata, è un'opera d'arte.
I festeggiamenti sono iniziati con un rinfresco e una conferenza stampa tenutasi nella sontuosa Villa Ca' Erizzo, a due passi dalla sede della Montegrappa a Bassano del Grappa. Fra gli oratori, lo storico ed esperto di alchimia Giovanni Marcadella del Museo di Bassano, Paulo Coelho, il CEO di Montegrappa Giuseppe Aquila, e suo padre Gianfranco, vera e propria eminence grise del marchio.

Nel pomeriggio gli ospiti hanno potuto visitare l'azienda, l'ideale per capire e apprezzare al meglio lo spirito delle penne Montegrappa. Tutto questo è stato il prologo alla festa vera e propria, che ha avuto luogo in serata nell'imponente Castello Superiore di Marostica.
Tamburini e una dimostrazione tradizionale di sbandieratori marosticensi hanno preceduto la cena di gala, in cui Paulo Coelho ha colto l'occasione per recitare una preghiera a San Giuseppe, oltre a una sua composizione originale. Gli ospiti hanno potuto seguire il tutto in una moltitudine di lingue, fra cui portoghese, giapponese, ungherese, italiano, inglese, tedesco, francese e molte altre.
Com'è tradizione di Coelho, i 300 ospiti includevano la sua famiglia e i suoi amici, a cui si sono aggiunti per questa occasione gli amici di Montegrappa. La moglie di Coelho, la pittrice Christina Oiticica, era solo una dei molti artisti, che comprendevano anche l'artista neo-pop brasiliano, pittore, serigrafista e scultore Romero Britto. Per la delizia degli ospiti, Britto ha dipinto due chitarre di Rudolf Schenker, chitarrista degli Scorpions, una delle quali assieme a Christina.
