Montegrappa Italy’s Maritime Republics: Amalfi

The first chapter of a fabulous journey through the history of the Mediterranean.

With Repubbliche Marinare Italiane - Amalfi, Montegrappa inaugurates a new series of Limited

Editions dedicated to the Italian Maritime Republics, a project destined to celebrate four cities that helped shape the history of the Mediterranean through trade, navigation, and the encounter between different cultures.

The first among the great Maritime Republics to achieve prosperity and autonomy, Amalfi represents the ideal starting point for this journey. Between the 10th and 12th centuries, the city became one of the Mediterranean’s most important commercial centres, developing economic and cultural relations that connected Western Europe with the great ports of the Byzantine and Arab East.

Its legacy, however, is not limited to navigation and trade. The Amalfitan Tables (Tabula de Amalpha), the oldest Italian maritime code, were born in Amalfi. Through sixty-six chapters, this extraordinary body of regulations transformed the experience accumulated by generations of merchants and navigators into shared knowledge, helping to regulate the commercial and maritime life of the Mediterranean for centuries. Among the principles that characterised its content was also the protection of those involved in navigation and assistance at sea, bearing witness to a vision that placed trust and responsibility at the heart of commercial life.

Repubbliche Marinare Italiane - Amalfi by Montegrappa translates Amalfi’s glorious history into an expression of fine Italian craftsmanship. The architecture of the Cathedral of St. Andrew and the Cloister of Paradise is reinterpreted through a spectacular lost-wax fusion in antiqued brass that envelops the cap. On the barrel, the Italian peninsula emerges from a sea of translucent blue enamel, while a natural sapphire marks the position of Amalfi in the heart of the Tyrrhenian Sea. A working compass concealed beneath the finely enamelled finial, decorated with the Amalfi Cross, pays tribute to the city’s great maritime tradition and its spirit of discovery. The collection is completed by a micro-cast clip inspired by the symbols of navigation and the historic Amalfi coat of arms.

Produced as a limited edition of 95 fountain pens and 95 rollerball pens, individually numbered in Roman numerals; an edition that refers to 958 AD, the year traditionally associated with the election of the first Doge of the Republic of Amalfi. Repubbliche Marinare Italiane - Amalfi inaugurates a tetralogy that will continue with Venice, Pisa and Genoa. A special presentation case will allow collectors to bring together the four creations in a single work dedicated to the cities that helped make the Mediterranean one of the most extraordinary meeting places for peoples, cultures and ideas.
